Our puissance is our own
Milton, Paradise Lost, Book V, 864
You gave this to us? You claim this as our gift
When it has always been ours to own? Even you,
In your supreme arrogance, cannot truly claim
That as our sovereign you granted us our arms,
Our strength of mind, the words in our mouths, yea,
Even our tongues that speak this defiance. Listen, old one,
Heed our call – our puissance is our own, and ours to use.
Another quotable quote from Satan, from the same speech as the last poem. He still contests that the angels have power, even without God – and as such, that they are in their rights to reject His authority. I’m fairly sure this is the first seven-line verse I’ve done for quite a while.
