Poem 202 – Once You Held Me

If not one day, why not eternal day?

Milton, Paradise Lost, Book VI, 424

Once you held me, kissed me like it mattered,
But that was a fleeting evening, a night that passed too soon,
And then we woke and you left me,
No more to bring me into Paradise,
Never again to fulfil my dreams
Though once you chose to do so,
And if one day, why not eternal days?

***

Dear readers,

Once again I sully Milton’s words with my poetry. The quote comes from Satan, proudly saying that, having held off the Heavenly Host for a day, they can do so again for eternity. I take the quote in a rather different direction.
