Poem 218 – A Creature Formed of Earth

Determined to advance into our room
A creature formed of earth

Milton, Paradise Lost, 148-149

Sliding across the soil
Scales slipping through the silt
The serpent brushes through the undergrowth
Shooting forth its splitting tongue
She tastes the air and Satan enters
To destroy all the elements, most the creature formed of earth.

Dear readers,

Essentially, I rather liked the description of humanity as ‘a creature formed of earth’, but ended up writing about the serpent instead.

Kind regards,
