This new favourite
Of heaven, this man of clay, son of despite
Milton, Paradise Lost, Book IX, 176-177
Look at him who God had created
From nothing but the earth on which he stands!
He shall now join that earth and plead with it to eat
After this moment that we see.
From this time on the heavenly host
Will not deign to walk before his kin.
Formed by God, now shaped by disdain –
He is both man of clay and son of despite.
I will admit that I find Satan’s resentment of humanity as God’s new favourite intriguing, though he is certainly successful in winning them to his party.
In other news, I’m enjoying updating my blog more regularly again.
