Poem 229 – If Inferior, Who Is Free?

For inferior who is free?

Milton, Paradise Lost, Book IX, 826

To stand as Lord and Judge over us,
And yet claim to be defender of our freedom,
Is nonsensical, for we stand so far below you
That the sun is but a dream
And cannot challenge you or spite your will –
If inferior, who is free?

Dear readers,

This is not intended to be a commentary on recent events, but they came to my mind after completing this poem.

Kind regards,
