Poem 237 – Ashen, Grey

His doom is fair
That dust I am, and shall to dust return

Milton, Paradise Lost, Book X, 769-70

Ashen, grey, nothing at the first,
And thus to naught I shall be at the last.
Nothing else between them is of great enormity
As the rest of all eternity as dust.

Dear readers,

The prosaic thought ‘dust to dust’ is on one hand, realistic, on the other hand, singularly disappointing – particularly if one considers that scientific methods suggest life should be considered an anomaly.

Kind regards,

The Hapless Neo-Romantic
