Poem 326 – I Will Not

I
Will
Not.
I abstain.
I refuse.
No! I know what you would have me do.
I shan’t, I won’t,
I defy your rule,
Nae king, nae laird,
And you, you fool,
I know what you would have me do.
Never will I,
I swear by my tomb,
Say aught but NAY!
All time cannot cool
My determination to repudiate
These instructions I’m given –
Aye, I know what you would have me do.
And I
Will
NOT.

Dear readers,

The ways in which people are asked and forced to do things that they find repellent have a grim fascination. It takes strength to refuse to do them – and many people should not be blamed for lacking the impossible strength to refuse to do certain things.

Fans of Terry Pratchett may recognise two references to his works in here – “I Will Not” from The Long War, and “Nae King, Nae Laird” from The Wee Free Men. I am something of a fan of his – as I think I’ve said before.

Kind regards,

The Hapless Neo-Romantic.
