Poem 323 – Second Birthday

Two years this boat has sailed,
Three hundred poems and score,
The time has passed so swiftly,
And yet there will be more.
A glittering horizon
Still opens for our voyage
So join me; the whole wide world is ours
Through day and night, under storm and stars.

Dear readers,

As is my custom (In that I’ve done it once), I am marking this blog’s birthday with a special poem. It echoes the very first poem I put here. Last year I simply marked it by putting up one of my favourite poems –  which was far less popular than the rather macabre poem that came before it, but that’s not really a problem. I hope that you enjoy this as much as I’ve enjoyed writing another year of poetry!

Kind regards,

The Hapless Neo-Romantic

Poem 162 – To the Angel on my Shoulder

Here’s to the angel on my shoulder,
Here’s to the voice that tells me all is well.
Well I remember the sound of tearing wings
The day my lovely angel fell.
The falling angel that landed on my shoulder;
The voice I hear when I’m alone;
Not so high as some saintly soulless seraphim,
Nor a darkling demon, he’s not that low.
Between heaven and hell my falling angel tumbles,
Though his charming voice never grows colder,
So over the sound of vanishing wings
I toast the angel on my shoulder.

Dear readers,
One whole year of ‘The Hapless Neo-Romantic’! It’s been incredible, doing three poems a week since that first poem ‘On Unknown Tides’I like to think that the tides are a little less unknown now – a lot has happened in that year. I’ve met lots of interesting people (You know who you are), done lots of interesting things (including an opera, numerous comedy shows, and an Edinburgh Fringe show), and hopefully got a bit better at poetry. Thanks for all of your support – hopefully I’ll make it to another year!
Kind regards, and a thousand thanks,
The Hapless Neo-Romantic

Poem 50 – Half-century

It seems strange that after fourty-nine poems,
The fiftieth should be so short,
But alas, of all the poems, this one approaches the deadline,
And if not submitted will be naught.
So here, have a poem – I hope that it is good –
Alas I have been engaged elsewhere,
And not done as I should.
Sorry.

Dear readers,
I hope that you are well. I apologise enormously for this poem’s tardiness, brevity, and general triviality. I was performing in a concert somewhat later than I had expected, and thus returned to my blog at the last minute. This was foolish, since I pressed ‘publish’ with less than 10 seconds left of my Friday deadline. As it confirmed my 50th post, the clock changed to 00:00:00 – not impressive at all.
My humblest apologies,
The Hapless Neo-Romantic
